This Week I’m Loving…

1.   Free Shipping Day – Think it’s too late to do your holiday shopping online? Be reassured. Thursday, December 17th, 2009, is Free Shipping Day. What started last year as a means to boost Internet sales is now becoming a holiday tradition. 717 online retailers will be offering free shipping with any purchases, and delivery is guaranteed by Christmas Eve! This is also the perfect time for shoppers in general to take advantage of this promotion.

2.   Muse Touring with Silversun Pickups – UK rock band Muse are coming back to Houston in the Spring for The Resistance tour! Recent Grammy nominees Silversun Pickups (yes!) are lined up to open the show. Tickets go on sale Saturday, December 19th though there will be pre-sales even sooner. You could try to enter the Muse fan pre-sale at http://tix.concertmaps.com/muse/ while tickets last… You could also try to check out HoustonToyotaCenter.com and use password TheResistance to access the pre-sale there. GA (no seats) tickets are gone really fast so better hurry up! Here’s a little video I recorded last October when Muse were the opening band for U2 360 Tour…

3.   Torta Cubana – What’s a torta cubana? Well, according to Wikipedia, a torta is a Mexican sandwich, served on an oblong 6-8 inch firm, crusty white sandwich roll. The Torta Cubana is said to be inspired by the popular Cuban Sandwich. It typically includes ham, white cheese, scrambled eggs, sausage, milanesa, and chipotle. I had it the other night at the casual but welcoming Ruchi’s Taqueria at 5201 Richmond Ave. I have to admit that the Torta Cubana seems overwhelming at first due to the wide variety of ingredients, but you will get hooked after the first bite!

4.   Holiday Balloon @ Discovery Green – See Houston’s magnificent downtown skyline floating 350 feet above Discovery Green! The Administaff Holiday Balloon is a 60-foot diameter helium-filled balloon tethered to the lawn that will take up to 14-17 passengers to a height of 35 stories above the park! You’ll get the ultimate panoramic view of the city during the holidays from the balloon’s rare vantage point. The new attraction is open daily until end February 2010. Be warned: adult tickets are $20/person on weekends for about 15 minutes of ride! Additionally, the balloon does not float around downtown… It’s actually anchored to a dressed base, but you do get to go up high in the air!
